Summary

A heartbreaking and hilarious memoir by iCarly and Sam & Cat star Jennette McCurdy about her struggles as a former child actor—including eating disorders, addiction, and a complicated relationship with her overbearing mother—and how she retook control of her life。

Jennette McCurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition。 Her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and Jennette would do anything to make her mother happy。 So she went along with what Mom called “calorie restriction,” eating little and weighing herself five times a day。 She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income。

In I’m Glad My Mom Died, Jennette recounts all this in unflinching detail—just as she chronicles what happens when the dream finally comes true。 Cast in a new Nickelodeon series called iCarly, she is thrust into fame。 Though Mom is ecstatic, emailing fan club moderators and getting on a first-name basis with the paparazzi (“Hi Gale!”), Jennette is riddled with anxiety, shame, and self-loathing, which manifest into eating disorders, addiction, and a series of unhealthy relationships。 These issues only get worse when, soon after taking the lead in the iCarly spinoff Sam & Cat alongside Ariana Grande, her mother dies of cancer。 Finally, after discovering therapy and quitting acting, Jennette embarks on recovery and decides for the first time in her life what she really wants。

Told with refreshing candor and dark humor, I’m Glad My Mom Died is an inspiring story of resilience, independence, and the joy of shampooing your own hair。

This book felt a lot like a trauma train, it was really well written and the author has a really great voice and her story is one worth telling。 I'm just curious how this book would have read had she written it a little more removed from her trauma and when she was older than her late 20s。 This book felt a lot like a trauma train, it was really well written and the author has a really great voice and her story is one worth telling。 I'm just curious how this book would have read had she written it a little more removed from her trauma and when she was older than her late 20s。 。。。more

I don’t think this kind of reads should be evaluated, but still I grade it as a 4 stars review。 It must have been really difficult to overcome the change even when the people around her didn’t wanted her to do it, society had the childish version of her stuck in their minds。 Sometimes we’re so used to something that we don’t realize the damage it causes to others and even more important to ourselves。 No matter who we are, at the end we’re just a person trying to live our life in the best possibl I don’t think this kind of reads should be evaluated, but still I grade it as a 4 stars review。 It must have been really difficult to overcome the change even when the people around her didn’t wanted her to do it, society had the childish version of her stuck in their minds。 Sometimes we’re so used to something that we don’t realize the damage it causes to others and even more important to ourselves。 No matter who we are, at the end we’re just a person trying to live our life in the best possible way, or at least get through it nicely。 。。。more

Jennette McCurdy reads REALLY FAST。 (As a fast-talker this is not a criticism because I get it。) It's a really interesting book to listen to because she really saves her inflection for the dialog, you can hear her doing her own childhood voice, her family members, Miranda Cosgrove (she does a really good approximation of her from my limited exposure), so the affect on the narration comes across as a little flat, but it honestly works better that way。 The cyclical trauma she goes through is what Jennette McCurdy reads REALLY FAST。 (As a fast-talker this is not a criticism because I get it。) It's a really interesting book to listen to because she really saves her inflection for the dialog, you can hear her doing her own childhood voice, her family members, Miranda Cosgrove (she does a really good approximation of her from my limited exposure), so the affect on the narration comes across as a little flat, but it honestly works better that way。 The cyclical trauma she goes through is what her life is like every day, and hearing her communicate so matter-of-factly hits hard。 So much of this is, to me, a horror story, until she realizes she doesn't have to go through it。 A really tough listen but well-worth it。 。。。more

If you’re someone that has a narc mom this may be a hard read but I can’t tell you how amazing it was to hear someone voice so many of my inside thoughts/experiences。 The ones I have never and will never tell anyone。 I cried a billion times but loved every second of this book。

This book is so good。 Touched on so many things from my past and now。 Would recommend to anyone who struggles with toxic parents。 Opened my eyes to things I may have done differently with my own children and how to go forward in a more positive direction。

Fascinating and upsetting look at McCurdy’s tormented life while all the public saw was the smiling and laughter of iCarly。 Reminded me a little of Westover’s Educated with a naive child at the mercy of an emotionally abusive and controlling parent。 The story broke my heart — McCurdy suffered endlessly and I’m sure will continue to live with the aftermath of her trauma。 TW: eating disorders

If you haven't heard about this one, glimpsed the cover somewhere, or read a headline about it, you've probably been living under a rock。 From the moment this book was announced it was on my "Want to Read" list。 I was a hardcore Nickelodeon kid, and iCarly was one of the last shows I watched before I graduated from children's programming, so of course, I had to hear Jennette's story。 •I'm Glad My Mom Died is a memoir about Jennette McCurdy's life in show business, from the first audition her mom If you haven't heard about this one, glimpsed the cover somewhere, or read a headline about it, you've probably been living under a rock。 From the moment this book was announced it was on my "Want to Read" list。 I was a hardcore Nickelodeon kid, and iCarly was one of the last shows I watched before I graduated from children's programming, so of course, I had to hear Jennette's story。 •I'm Glad My Mom Died is a memoir about Jennette McCurdy's life in show business, from the first audition her mom dragged her to as a kid, through all the struggles of coming of age in the spotlight, to her journey to healing。 This book read like fiction, from Jennette's point of view, I found myself forgetting I was reading about someone's life and something someone fabricated for a dramatic story。 Jennette helps the reader understand that life as a celebrity isn't all fun and games, but scary and difficult and sometimes just downright horrifying。 •Definitely an emotional read, but I'm Glad My Mom Died is well deserving of the praise it continues to receive。 It's also really hard to talk about a book like this when it's all about the trauma a living being went through。 I am so thankful for Jennette sharing her story with the world, but I also want to acknowledge the challenges that must have gone with it, and also be respectful of that。 It can't be easy sharing the details of abuse and addiction (be sure to check the content warnings before reading!), among many other aspects of her life。 But Jennette's story, where she started, what she went through, and where she is now, is sad and beautiful and we need more honest voices like hers in the world。 。。。more

This was an incredibly sad inside look at life inside a child star's "success" story。 It's well written。 I closed the book feeling guilty for having enjoyed watching the author in iCarly, which had been one of my daughter's favorite TV shows。 This was an incredibly sad inside look at life inside a child star's "success" story。 It's well written。 I closed the book feeling guilty for having enjoyed watching the author in iCarly, which had been one of my daughter's favorite TV shows。 。。。more

This book caught my attention just from the first few pages。 Reading this heartbreaking recounting of Jennette’s experiences made me feel every emotion。 Her writing style is so raw and honest and beautiful。 It made me realize things about myself that I never fully recognized, and encouraged me to reach out for help。 I would highly recommend this read!

My rating based on writing style: 5/5I always let people know when I am rating a nonfiction/memoir that I am rating it based on writing style。 Not on the story (it's someone's life for crying out loud)。 This was a hard read to get through。 While the audiobook was 6 hours it was not an easy listening book based on the subject matter, but I think the more we learn about some of the things that child actors go through the better we can prepare the world。 There is always going to be child actors but My rating based on writing style: 5/5I always let people know when I am rating a nonfiction/memoir that I am rating it based on writing style。 Not on the story (it's someone's life for crying out loud)。 This was a hard read to get through。 While the audiobook was 6 hours it was not an easy listening book based on the subject matter, but I think the more we learn about some of the things that child actors go through the better we can prepare the world。 There is always going to be child actors but how we go about the system needs to change。 The fact that Jennette was suffering and there was never an intervention until she was an adult speaks volumes about the child acting scene and shows I would have watched growing up。 Thoughtful, dark and important, I would recommend this book。 Thanks for reading,Sidny 。。。more

I’m Glad My Mom Died answers those questions and many more。 There’s a little bit for everyone in this book: family trauma, mental illness, eating disorders, fame and paparazzi abuse, and sexual abuse。 I truly think everyone could find something about her life relatable。 Plus, McCurdy is hilarious!! There’s a passage about her boyfriend thinking he is _____ (I won’t spoil) that made me laugh out loud。 Her self-deprecating humor and bluntness make for a thrilling read。 I recommend to everyone!!! 。。。more

I wasn't sure what to expect from this book but it's highly rated and people seem to enjoy it。 So, I thought I'd give it a try。 It wasn't really what I expected。 I enjoyed her writing style and she is a very good storyteller。 It was a quick read on Audible and I finished it in a day。Despite these attributes, it really wasn't my cup of tea。 It's a different type of book than I normally read。 I probably wouldn't recommend it to anyone but I wouldn't trash it either。I hope she is getting the help s I wasn't sure what to expect from this book but it's highly rated and people seem to enjoy it。 So, I thought I'd give it a try。 It wasn't really what I expected。 I enjoyed her writing style and she is a very good storyteller。 It was a quick read on Audible and I finished it in a day。Despite these attributes, it really wasn't my cup of tea。 It's a different type of book than I normally read。 I probably wouldn't recommend it to anyone but I wouldn't trash it either。I hope she is getting the help she needs to overcome the issues from her childhood。 And I would like to know how she is now and what else is going on with her。 。。。more

I didn’t know anything about Jennette McCurdy prior to reading her memoir。 This book was eye opening for me regarding the pressures that famous youth face。 What her mothers influence has done to her in combination with the pressure of being famous, will be a life long battle for her to overcome。

Ingrid

Did not get the hype。 The autobiography tried to depict a reconciliation with an abusive and traumatic upbringing but just felt like a collection of stories from childhood。

Gayle Parker

While I am glad that Jeanette has the strength to tell the story of her abusive childhood so that people can learn from her experience and stop idolizing stardom, I found this story quite difficult to listen to and the humor fell short as it was only there to mask the pain (but that is how humor is used as a coping mechanism。

I binged the whole book in one sitting and wow! It was so captivating and made me feel like I really understood her experience。 I felt the pain and struggle and the thoughts that caged her。 I also felt the freedom and hard earned state of mind she arrives to at the end and it’s fantastic! Don’t know why the reviews on the book say it’s funny。 I think that this is a serious reflection on the unhealthy pressure and relationships that defined her early life。 Any comedy that would levy the situation I binged the whole book in one sitting and wow!
